JERRY MURFF

After carefully planning a painting, the shapes and colors, I begin, it never turns out the way I planned.

The first wash is darker than I intended. The hue is too red or too green. I'm forced to compensate at each step. Then the next and the next. A series of mishaps. Not what I had planned.

I lose control and the watercolor takes over. I'm the permissive parent and the watercolor an unruly child that won't do as it's told. The watercolor has a mind of it's own. You're not the boss of me it says.

I let it do as it wants and I watch, a persistent observer. I keep working until it pleases me. If it doesn't, I tear it up and start another. It's just a piece of paper with color on it.

Jerry's paintings have been featured in shows at the Brion Gallery in Lambertville, New Jersey, the Station Gallery in Greenville, Delaware, the Joan Robey Gallery in Denver, Colorado, the Hacienda Gallery in Ojai, California and the Rogue Gallery in Malibu, California. His most recent paintings can be seen at the Jerry Solomon Gallery in Los Angeles, California.

Jerry studied at the Texas Academy of Art in Houston, Texas and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Jerry is a member of the American Watercolor Society.
